Whether you're a pear, apple, column or hourglass, there's a skirt style to flatter your body.

Finding the right skirt type for you is a matter of understanding your body shape. Are you a pear, apple, column or hourglass?

Skirts To Suit Pear Shaped Women

Pear shaped women can sometimes curse their bottom heaviness with large hips and bottoms. For a skirt to be the most flattering, curvy pear shaped women need to de-emphasise the fullness of their hips. This means that full skirts, minis and very tight skirts are a definite no as these will only draw attention to the full hips.

Skirt styles that work well on pear shaped women include a-line, which flare out slightly and straight skirts provided that they are a good fit, that is don’t ride up or are too big. High waisted and belted skirts also work well to draw attention away from the hips.

Dark colours suit pear shaped women particularly when teamed with a top that features a bright colour or detailing which will draw attention to the upper body and away from the troublesome fuller lower body.

Asymmetric Skirts for Apple Body Shapes

Apple body shapes are characterised by roundness in the stomach and tips to flatter apples include drawing attention to the bust and up and showing off your legs.

Asymmetric and handkerchief hem lines suit apples as well as bias cut skirts, wrap, flip and panelled skirts.

To detract from the full waist, apple body shapes should avoid skirts with high waistbands, excessive waist detailing and waist gathering. Knee and calf length skirts flatter the apple body shape.

Soft flowing fabrics such as silk, jersey, wool crepe and soft cottons work well to hang off the apple body shape rather than cling in the wrong places.

Columns Need to Create A Curvy Impression

For women who are straight up and down with little waist definition, skirt choices need to be able to create a curvy silhouette.

A-line, panelled and pleated skirts all work well to create curves as do pencil skirts when teamed with belts or belted jackets. Pockets will bring attention to the hips and the additional bulk will create the hint of a curve.

Prints and patterns can assist with creating curves, column shaped women can try geometric patterns, paisleys and polka dots in crisp fabrics including cotton and linen.

High Waisted Skirts On An Hourglass Figure

A woman with the classic hourglass figure with small waist and proportionate hips and bust has a large range of choice when it comes to flattering skirts.

Flip, bias, full, pencil, a-line and the 50s style skirts will all easily flatter the small waist of the hourglass figure. High waisted skirts and wide belts also bring attention to the waist.

Knee length skirts will suit an hourglass figure better than maxi-length with light to medium weight fabrics, such as cotton line and silk, providing the best choice.

Choosing a skirt that flatters your body shape will provide a base for an outfit that makes you feel like a million dollars.
